Question 1

What are the three layers of connective tissue that protect nerve fibers?

Accepted Answer

Nerves have three protective connective tissue layers. The epineurium is the outermost layer that holds blood vessels and fascicles together. The perineurium surrounds each fascicle, a bundle of parallel axons. The endoneurium is the innermost sheath encasing individual axons and their associated Schwann cells.

Question 2

How many cranial nerves and spinal nerves does the peripheral nervous system contain?

Accepted Answer

The peripheral nervous system contains 12 pairs of cranial nerves originating from the brain and 31 pairs of spinal nerves originating from the spinal cord. Cranial nerves handle sensory functions like vision and smell, plus motor control for facial expressions and speech. Spinal nerves transmit sensory information from the limbs and trunk while carrying motor commands to muscles.

Question 3

What is the difference between dorsal root ganglia and autonomic ganglia?

Accepted Answer

Dorsal root ganglia are sensory structures located along the spinal cord that relay sensory information from peripheral receptors to the spinal cord, facilitating touch, pain, temperature, and proprioception. Autonomic ganglia are motor structures associated with involuntary functions like digestion and heart rate. They subdivide into sympathetic ganglia near the spinal cord and parasympathetic ganglia near visceral organs.

Question 4

What role do sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia play in the autonomic nervous system?

Accepted Answer

Sympathetic ganglia, positioned near the spinal cord, mobilize the body's resources during stress through fight-or-flight responses. Parasympathetic ganglia, located close to visceral organs, oversee rest-and-digest activities and energy conservation. Together, these autonomic ganglia regulate involuntary functions including respiration, digestion, and heart rate.

Question 5

How are axons organized within a nerve structure?

Accepted Answer

Axons within a nerve are organized into smaller bundles called fascicles, each surrounded by the perineurium. This layered arrangement facilitates efficient transmission of electrical signals along axons. Each individual axon is enclosed with its Schwann cells by the endoneurium, ensuring precise and protected transmission of nerve impulses throughout the peripheral nervous system.

Question 6

What functions do spinal nerves perform in the peripheral nervous system?

Accepted Answer

The 31 pairs of spinal nerves emerge from the spinal cord and branch throughout the body. Each spinal nerve is a mixed nerve containing both afferent sensory fibers and efferent motor fibers, allowing bidirectional information flow. They transmit sensory information from the limbs and trunk to the central nervous system and carry motor commands from the central nervous system to muscles.

Question 7

What are ganglia and why are they important to peripheral nervous system function?

Accepted Answer

Ganglia are clusters of neuron cell bodies located outside the central nervous system that are integral to peripheral nervous system operation. They relay sensory information and regulate involuntary functions. Categorized by location and function, ganglia include dorsal root ganglia for sensory processing and autonomic ganglia for motor control of involuntary activities.
