Question 1

What are sympathetic chain ganglia and where are they located?

Accepted Answer

Sympathetic chain ganglia, also called sympathetic trunk ganglia or paravertebral ganglia, are paired relay stations located bilaterally along the spinal cord. They serve as synapse sites between preganglionic and postganglionic neurons. These ganglia are organized into five regions: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal, with each region containing multiple ganglia that innervate different body structures.

Question 2

How do postganglionic neurons exit the sympathetic chain ganglia?

Accepted Answer

Postganglionic neurons follow four distinct pathways from the sympathetic chain ganglia. They merge with spinal nerves through gray rami communicans to innervate skin; wrap around arteries as cephalic periarterial nerves to supply the face and head; form sympathetic nerves reaching thoracic organs like the heart and lungs; or travel as splanchnic nerves to sympathetic pathways collateral ganglia and other visceral targets.

Question 3

Which organs do the cervical and thoracic ganglia innervate?

Accepted Answer

The superior cervical ganglion innervates the head and heart, while middle and inferior cervical ganglia supply the heart, blood vessels, neck, shoulder, and upper limbs. Thoracic ganglia, numbering eleven to twelve, synapse only until the fifth thoracic level, with postganglionic neurons innervating the heart, lungs, and bronchi.

Question 4

What happens to preganglionic fibers below the thoracic-five region?

Accepted Answer

Most preganglionic fibers below the thoracic-five region bypass the sympathetic chain ganglia without synapsing. Instead, they travel directly as splanchnic nerves to reach collateral ganglia, where they synapse with postganglionic neurons that innervate abdominal and pelvic organs and other visceral structures.

Question 5

How do cephalic periarterial nerves supply the head and face?

Accepted Answer

Postganglionic neurons from the sympathetic chain ganglia exit as cephalic periarterial nerves that wrap around arteries, such as the carotid arteries. These nerves provide sympathetic innervation to facial structures including sweat glands, blood vessels, hair follicles, and other head structures.

Question 6

What is the role of gray rami communicans in sympathetic innervation?

Accepted Answer

Gray rami communicans are connections through which postganglionic axons merge with spinal nerves. These fibers provide sympathetic innervation to the skin of the neck, torso, and limbs, allowing the sympathetic nervous system to regulate sweat production, blood vessel constriction, and hair follicle activity in these regions.

Question 7

How do sympathetic nerves differ from splanchnic nerves in their function?

Accepted Answer

Sympathetic nerves carry postganglionic fibers that have already synapsed in the chain ganglia and directly innervate visceral effectors in the thoracic cavity, such as the heart and lungs. Splanchnic nerves, by contrast, carry preganglionic fibers that pass through the chain without synapsing, traveling to collateral ganglia for further relay.
