Question 1

How are phase voltages related to line voltages in a delta-delta circuit?

Accepted Answer

In a delta-delta configuration, phase voltages are identical to line voltages because the delta-connected source creates a closed loop without a neutral wire. Assuming positive sequence and zero line impedances, the phase voltages directly equal the voltages across the load impedances in each phase.

Question 2

What is the relationship between line current and phase current in a delta-connected load?

Accepted Answer

Each line current is the vector sum of the two phase currents at that node, derived using Kirchhoff's Current Law. The magnitude of each line current equals the square root of three times the phase current magnitude, and it lags the corresponding phase current by 30 degrees due to phase differences in the delta connection.

Question 3

How do you calculate phase currents in a delta-to-delta system?

Accepted Answer

Phase currents are calculated by dividing the phase voltage by the load impedance per phase. Since phase voltages equal line voltages in a delta configuration, you divide each line voltage by its corresponding phase impedance to determine the current flowing through that phase of the load.

Question 4

Why is converting a delta-delta circuit to its wye equivalent useful?

Accepted Answer

Converting the delta source and load to wye equivalents simplifies the three-phase system into a single-phase equivalent circuit, making analysis easier. The wye source phase voltage equals the delta line voltage divided by the square root of three with a negative 30-degree phase shift, while wye load impedance equals delta impedance divided by three.

Question 5

What impedance transformation occurs when converting delta load to wye equivalent?

Accepted Answer

When converting a delta-connected load to its wye equivalent, each wye-connected load impedance equals one-third of the corresponding delta-connected load impedance. This transformation, combined with the voltage adjustment, allows the complex three-phase delta circuit to be analyzed as a simpler single-phase equivalent.

Question 6

Why are delta-delta configurations preferred in industrial power systems?

Accepted Answer

Delta-delta configurations enable efficient power transmission over long distances and reduce harmonic distortion without requiring a neutral connection. They maintain consistent voltage levels and facilitate smooth operation of three-phase motors, making them ideal for high-power machinery, transformers, and motor control centers in industrial applications.

Question 7

How does positive sequence assumption simplify delta-delta circuit analysis?

Accepted Answer

Assuming positive sequence means the three phase voltages are identical in magnitude and equally spaced 120 degrees apart in phase. This allows phase voltages to be expressed directly without a neutral reference, simplifying calculations for power distribution in three phase and single phase circuits and enabling straightforward determination of line and phase currents.
