Question 1

What are the main layers of the stomach wall and their functions?

Accepted Answer

The stomach wall has four layers: the serosa (simple squamous epithelium providing protection), the muscularis externa (three smooth muscle layers enabling mechanical digestion), the submucosa (connective tissue housing blood vessels and nerves), and the mucosa (containing gastric pits that secrete digestive enzymes and gastric juices). Each layer works together to support digestion and protect the organ.

Question 2

How do parietal cells contribute to stomach function and nutrient absorption?

Accepted Answer

Parietal cells secrete hydrochloric acid (HCl), which breaks down food and eliminates bacteria, and intrinsic factor, which is necessary for vitamin B12 absorption. These secretions are essential for both chemical digestion and enabling the body to absorb this critical nutrient needed for red blood cell formation and nervous system health.

Question 3

What role do mucous neck cells play in protecting the stomach?

Accepted Answer

Mucous neck cells, located at the isthmus of gastric pits, secrete a thin, acidic mucus that protects the stomach lining from the harsh acidic environment created during digestion. This protective barrier prevents the stomach wall from being damaged by the strong hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes present in the gastric juices.

Question 4

What digestive enzymes do chief cells produce and what do they do?

Accepted Answer

Chief cells secrete pepsinogen and gastric lipase. Pepsinogen is converted to pepsin, which breaks down proteins into smaller peptides. Gastric lipase assists in fat digestion. Together, these enzymes enable the chemical breakdown of food components necessary before the stomach contents move to the small intestine for further mechanical and chemical digestion.

Question 5

How do enteroendocrine cells regulate stomach function?

Accepted Answer

Enteroendocrine cells, scattered throughout the gastric pits, secrete hormones including gastrin and ghrelin. Gastrin stimulates gastric acid production to enhance digestion, while ghrelin triggers hunger signals. These hormones coordinate the stomach's digestive activities and regulate appetite, linking the stomach's chemical processes to the body's overall metabolic needs.

Question 6

What is the relationship between the submucosa and the stomach's digestive capabilities?

Accepted Answer

The submucosa is a connective tissue layer beneath the muscularis externa that houses blood vessels, nerves, and glands. It supplies oxygen and nutrients to the stomach wall and provides neural connections for coordinating contractions and secretions. This layer is essential for delivering resources needed to support the stomach's mechanical and chemical digestive functions.

Question 7

How do the three muscle layers of the muscularis externa enable stomach movement?

Accepted Answer

The muscularis externa contains three layers of smooth muscle—longitudinal, circular, and oblique—arranged in different directions. These layers contract in coordinated patterns to churn and mix food with gastric juices, enabling mechanical digestion. The varied muscle orientations allow the stomach to contract forcefully and move food efficiently toward the pyloric sphincter for gastric emptying.
