Stress refers to the physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral reactions to events perceived as threatening or challenging.
Physically, it can cause fatigue, sleep disturbances, and other health issues like nausea and chest pain.
Emotionally, stress may trigger anxiety, depression, fear, irritability, anger, and frustration.
Cognitively, stress can include difficulty in concentration and decision-making.
Behavioral changes may involve overeating or increased emotional reactions, like crying.
Stress can be classified into distress and eustress.
Distress arises from negative events, such as experiencing a car accident, while eustress results from positive but demanding events, like getting married.
Researchers approach stress in three complementary ways.
Firstly, "stress as a stimulus" focuses on identifying various types of stressful events, like job loss.
"Stress as a response" examines people's psychological and physical reactions to stressful situations, including both positive and negative effects.
Lastly, "stress as a transaction" analyzes the interaction between stressful life events and how individuals perceive and evaluate events and cope with them.
