In behavior therapy, a therapist employs principles of learning, such as classical and operant conditioning, to help clients change undesirable behaviors.
It employs a range of techniques, such as exposure therapy, systematic desensitization, flooding, and aversive conditioning, which are among the most commonly used by therapists.
Exposure therapy confronts anxiety by exposing clients to feared stimuli through real-life, visualization, or virtual reality methods, with graded exposure starting from the least feared stimulus.
Similarly, systematic desensitization reduces anxiety by pairing relaxation with feared stimuli, such as helping someone with a fear of public speaking practice relaxation techniques while gradually progressing from speaking to one person to addressing a larger audience.
Conversely, flooding confronts the most feared stimuli directly and intensely to extinguish avoidance behaviors, such as having someone with a fear of dogs immediately pet a friendly dog under controlled conditions.
Lastly, aversive conditioning reduces behaviors like overeating by pairing them with unpleasant stimuli, such as nausea induced by a bitter taste.
