The dark triad comprises three personality traits: psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism. Negative other bias is a tendency to perceive others more negatively, viewing them as emotionally vulnerable, having low self-esteem and agreeableness, and high neuroticism, anxiety, and depression. This bias is most prominent in individuals with Machiavellian traits, who display the strongest tendency to assume others possess negative psychological attributes and emotional weakness.

Dark triad traits are perceived unequally by others. Machiavellians are viewed as less dominant, sociable, and open-minded. Psychopaths are seen as dominant but lacking nurturance and conscientiousness. Narcissists receive the least negative evaluations, primarily perceived as less ingenious but often viewed as more likable and brighter than Machiavellians and psychopaths.

Individuals with dark triad traits rely more on verbal cues and intuition than non-verbal communication when assessing others' emotional traits and vulnerability. Despite this preference for verbal information, their reliance on these cues does not enhance their accuracy in judging emotional vulnerability compared to individuals without dark traits.

Individuals with dark triad traits exhibit negative other bias by perceiving most people as emotionally weak and disagreeable. They tend to view others as having low self-esteem, high neuroticism, anxiety, and depression. This perception pattern reflects their tendency to assume negative psychological attributes in others rather than accurate assessment of actual emotional vulnerability.

Machiavellians are perceived as less dominant, sociable, and open-minded, while narcissists receive more favorable evaluations. Narcissists are viewed as more likable and brighter than Machiavellians, with their primary negative perception being low ingenuity. This difference suggests narcissists' self-enhancing and socially engaging behaviors lead to relatively more positive social impressions.

Despite relying on verbal cues and intuition, individuals with dark triad traits are no more accurate in judging others' emotional vulnerability than non-dark triad individuals. Instead of accurate assessment, they exhibit negative other bias, systematically perceiving others as emotionally vulnerable and psychologically deficient regardless of actual emotional states.
