Acoustic Feature Analysis

Acoustic feature analysis is a method for quantifying the measurable properties of sound to characterize signals and interpret their biological or behavioral significance. It typically converts recordings into numerical features such as frequency, amplitude, duration, timing, and spectral shape, allowing researchers to compare sounds across individuals, contexts, or behavioral states. In behavior research, these measurements support the study of vocal communication, social interactions, activity patterns, and responses to environmental conditions. Automated feature extraction and statistical classification can also organize large audio datasets, helping researchers identify consistent signal patterns and evaluate how acoustic variation relates to behavior.

In this video we first describe fabrication and operation procedures of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) acoustic counterflow device. We then demonstrate an experimental setup that allows for both qualitative flow visualization and quantitative analysis of complex flows within the SAW pumping device.

Foreign Accent and Forensic Speaker Identification in Voice Lineups: The Influence of Acoustic Features Based on Prosody

2024

This research aimed to make a comparison between L1-L2-English and L1-L2 Portuguese to check how much the effect of a foreign accent accounts for both metrics and prosodic-acoustic parameters, as well as for the choice of the target voice in a voice lineup.

Activating Molecules, Ions, and Solid Particles with Acoustic Cavitation

Acoustic cavitation in liquids submitted to power ultrasound creates transient extreme conditions inside the collapsing bubbles, which are the origin of unusual chemical reactivity and light emission, known as sonoluminescence. In the presence of noble gases, nonequilibrium plasma is formed. The "hot" particles and the photons generated by collapsing bubbles are able to excite species in solution.

2016

Acoustofluidic devices use ultrasonic waves within microfluidic channels to manipulate, concentrate and isolate suspended micro and nanoscopic entities. This protocol describes the fabrication and operation of such a device supporting bulk acoustic standing waves to focus particles in a central streamline without the aid of sheath fluids.

Visual Search for Features and Conjunctions

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University How do people find objects in cluttered visual scenes? Think, for example, of looking for keys on a messy desk, finding the ripest-looking fruit at the grocery store, locating your car when you can’t quite remember where you parked it, or finding an old friend at an airport exit gate. Clearly, an understanding of visual perception is going to play a role in any answers, and more specifically, an understanding of visual attention...
