Acoustic Parameter Extraction

Acoustic Parameter Extraction is the process of measuring quantitative features from sound recordings to describe and analyze acoustic signals. It uses signal-processing methods to convert recorded waveforms into parameters such as frequency, amplitude, duration, bandwidth, and temporal pattern, often after filtering or segmenting individual calls. In behavioral research, these measurements help characterize vocalizations, identify changes associated with social interactions or environmental conditions, and distinguish behavioral states or signal types. By transforming complex sounds into comparable data, acoustic parameter extraction supports objective analysis of animal communication, behavioral variation, and responses to experimental treatments.

Habituation and prepulse inhibition of startle are operational measures of sensory gating. Sensory gating is disrupted in schizophrenia, and some other mental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. We here describe a standard protocol to assess short-term and long-term habituation as well as prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle responses in rats and mice.

Activating Molecules, Ions, and Solid Particles with Acoustic Cavitation

Acoustic cavitation in liquids submitted to power ultrasound creates transient extreme conditions inside the collapsing bubbles, which are the origin of unusual chemical reactivity and light emission, known as sonoluminescence. In the presence of noble gases, nonequilibrium plasma is formed. The "hot" particles and the photons generated by collapsing bubbles are able to excite species in solution.

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The distribution of a group of organic biomarkers called glycerol-dialkyl glycerol-tetraethers (GDGTs), produced by a suite of archaea and bacteria, were found in modern sediments to change in a predictable manner in response to air or water temperature1,2. Therefore, the distribution of these biomarkers in a sequence of sediments of known age can be used to reconstruct the evolution of air and/or water temperature on...
