Algometer

An algometer is an instrument that measures sensitivity to pressure by quantifying the force required to produce a reported sensation of pain or discomfort. During testing, a calibrated probe applies gradually increasing pressure to a selected body site until the participant signals a threshold, providing a reproducible measure of pressure pain sensitivity and pain-related behavior. Researchers use algometry to compare sensory responses across individuals, assess changes associated with injury or disease, and evaluate behavioral outcomes after treatment. Because results can be influenced by reporting, attention, and testing conditions, standardized procedures and participant communication are essential for reliable interpretation.

Source: Shannonhouse, J., et al.In Vivo Calcium Imaging of Neuronal Ensembles in Networks of Primary Sensory Neurons in Intact Dorsal Root Ganglia. J. Vis. Exp. (2023).The video demonstrates an in vivo calcium imaging technique to monitor neuronal activity in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) of a transgenic mouse. DRG neurons express a calcium indicator that increases fluorescence intensity upon binding to calcium. Mechanical or thermal stimuli applied to a hind paw generate action potentials that...
