Behavioral Video Analysis

Behavioral video analysis is the systematic study of recorded behavior to identify, measure, and interpret observable actions over time. Researchers examine video footage using structured coding schemes, timestamps, and behavioral categories, often reviewing events frame by frame or with software that measures duration, frequency, sequence, and interactions under defined experimental conditions. In behavioral science, this approach converts complex activity into reproducible data for testing hypotheses about learning, social interaction, communication, movement, and responses to environmental or experimental changes. It can improve measurement consistency, reveal patterns that direct observation may miss, and support comparisons across individuals, groups, and study conditions.

Measuring the impacts of environmental contaminants on fish behavior is often subjective and challenging particularly when dealing with sublethal endpoints. We describe methods including video technology to quantify swimming behavior of early life stage white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) during and after 96 hr acute exposures to various concentrations of copper.
