Mental Effort

Mental effort is the amount of cognitive work a person invests to process information, solve problems, make decisions, or control behavior. It arises when tasks require sustained attention, working memory, response inhibition, or the coordination of competing goals, and it typically increases with complexity, uncertainty, and distraction. In behavioral research, mental effort is examined through task performance, response patterns, self-reports, and physiological measures to assess how people allocate limited cognitive resources. Understanding these demands helps explain learning, decision-making, self-control, fatigue, and errors, while informing the design of educational tasks, human-computer interfaces, and environments that support effective behavior.
