Neonatal Hypoxia

Neonatal hypoxia is a condition in which a newborn receives insufficient oxygen, potentially disrupting brain function and later behavior. Reduced oxygen availability limits cellular energy production, impairs neuronal activity, and can trigger metabolic stress and brain injury, with effects influenced by the severity and duration of oxygen deprivation. In behavioral research, neonatal hypoxia models help examine changes in learning, memory, motor activity, social interaction, and emotional responses. Studying these outcomes connects early-life physiological injury with long-term nervous system development and supports evaluation of protective interventions, rehabilitation strategies, and environmental factors that may improve developmental outcomes.

This article describes the methodology for administering short periods of intermittent hypoxia to postnatal day 1-8 mouse or rat pups. This approach effectively elicits a robust tissue level “priming effect” on cultured neural progenitor cells that are harvested within 30 min of hypoxia exposure.

Large animal models have good translational values in the examination of physiology and pharmacology of neonatal asphyxia. Using newborn piglets, we develop an experimental protocol to simulate neonatal asphyxia which has advantages of studying the systemic and regional hemodynamics, oxygen transport with biochemical and pathologic pathways and correlations.
