Visual Face Processing

Visual face processing is the set of perceptual and cognitive mechanisms used to detect, recognize, and interpret faces, making it central to social behavior and communication. The visual system analyzes facial features and their spatial relationships, integrates information about identity, expression, gaze, and age, and engages specialized cortical regions such as the fusiform face area. Behavioral research uses tasks involving face recognition, emotion identification, and gaze perception to examine attention, memory, social judgment, and individual differences. Studying these processes also helps explain atypical face perception in conditions such as prosopagnosia and autism, while informing models of human cognition and computer vision.

2016

A method is described to quantify the quality of visual information processing based on reflexive eye movements in response to specific visual modalities. Reaction times and fixation output parameters are used to characterize visual performance in children with and without visual impairments from 6 months of age.

It is unclear how top-down signals from the ventral visual stream affect movement. We developed a paradigm to test motor behavior towards a target on a 3D depth inversion illusion. Significant differences are reported in both deliberate, goal-directed movements and automatic actions under illusory and veridical viewing conditions.

2017

This article describes a setup and method for the in situ visualization of oil samples under a variety of temperature and pressure conditions that aim to emulate refining and upgrading processes. It is primarily used for studying isotropic and anisotropic media involved in the fouling behavior of petroleum feeds.

Interaction between Phonological and Semantic Processes in Visual Word Recognition using Electrophysiology

We present a protocol to explore the relative activation sequence of phonology and semantics in visual word recognition. The results show that consistent with interactive accounts, semantic and phonological representations may be processed interactively, and higher-level linguistic representations may affect early processing.
