Sortilin-glut4 Interaction

The sortilin-GLUT4 interaction is a protein association involved in sorting and trafficking the glucose transporter GLUT4, a process central to cellular glucose uptake and energy metabolism. Sortilin functions as an intracellular sorting receptor that helps direct GLUT4 through the trans-Golgi and endosomal compartments into specialized storage vesicles; in response to insulin signaling, these vesicles move to and fuse with the plasma membrane, increasing glucose transport into cells. Studying this interaction clarifies how protein trafficking regulates glucose homeostasis and may provide insight into defects associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and related metabolic disorders.
