Lipid Phase Separation

Lipid phase separation is the formation of distinct, coexisting regions within a lipid membrane or membrane-mimicking system, a phenomenon that helps organize biological interfaces. It occurs when differences in lipid composition, acyl-chain packing, cholesterol content, or temperature make components energetically favor separate liquid phases, often producing liquid-ordered and liquid-disordered domains. In bioengineering, researchers use this behavior to build and analyze model membranes, control the localization of membrane proteins, and study how nanoscale organization affects signaling and transport. Understanding the conditions that stabilize or dissolve these domains supports the design of biosensors, drug-delivery systems, and engineered cellular interfaces.
