Microfabrication Compatible

Microfabrication compatible describes a material, device, or process that can be patterned and integrated using microscale manufacturing methods, a requirement for building reproducible bioengineering systems. Compatibility depends on whether the material withstands processing conditions such as photolithography, etching, deposition, bonding, or molding while preserving the required feature size, surface properties, and biological function. In bioengineering, these characteristics support the fabrication of microfluidic channels, cell culture platforms, biosensors, and lab-on-a-chip devices. Selecting compatible materials aligns fabrication precision with biocompatibility and reliable operation, enabling controlled studies of cells, fluids, and biomolecular interactions at small scales.

Microfabrication via Photolithography

2023

The fabrication of BioMEM devices is often done using a microfabrication technique called photolithography. This widely used method utilizes light to transfer a pattern onto a silicon wafer, and provides the basis for the fabrication of many types of BioMEM devices. This video presents the photolithography technique, shows how the process is performed in the cleanroom, and introduces some applications of the process.

2014

A quantitative method to study spontaneous migration of cells in a one-dimensional confined microenvironment is described. This method takes advantage of microfabricated channels and can be used to study migration of large number of cells under different conditions in single experiments.

We report on techniques to micropattern nanoporous gold thin films via stencil printing and photolithography, as well as methods to culture cells on the microfabricated patterns. In addition, we describe image analysis methods to characterize morphology of the material and the cultured cells using scanning electron and fluorescence microscopy techniques.

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA While the use of various chemicals in experimental research is essential, it is also important to safely store and maintain them as a part of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program. The properties of chemicals and their reactivity vary broadly and if chemicals are not managed, stored, and labeled properly, they can have harmful or even destructive consequences such as toxic fume...
