Multi-mode Fiber

Multi-mode fiber is an optical fiber designed to transmit light through multiple propagation paths, or modes, making it useful for carrying signals over short distances and interacting with biological systems. Its relatively large core allows light rays entering at different angles to travel simultaneously, while modal dispersion can broaden pulses and limit bandwidth compared with single-mode fiber. In bioengineering, multi-mode fiber supports fluorescence collection, biomedical imaging, spectroscopy, and optical sensing by delivering and receiving light within compact probes. These capabilities enable minimally invasive measurements of tissue structure, chemical composition, and physiological activity, supporting diagnostics and experimental studies.

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.

We describe a technique for inscribing identical fiber Bragg gratings into each core of a multicore fiber. This is achieved by introducing an additional surface into the optical path to mitigate lensing by the curved surface of the fiber cladding.

We demonstrate the transmission of multiple independent signals through a multimode fiber using wavefront shaping employing a single spatial light modulator. By modulating the wavefront for each signal individually, spatially separated foci are transmitted. Potential applications are multiplexed data transfer in communications engineering and endoscopic light delivery in biophotonics.

What is a Mode?

2023

The mode is one of the commonly used measures of a central tendency. It is defined as the most frequent value in a data set. There can be more than one mode in a data set if multiple values have the same highest frequency. For instance, suppose that the Statistics exam scores of 20 students are: 50; 53; 59; 59; 63; 63; 72; 72; 72; 72; 72; 76; 78; 81; 83; 84; 84; 84; 90; 93. Here, the mode is 72, as it occurs most frequently, five times. A data set with two modes is called bimodal. For example,...
