Trabeculation

Trabeculation is the formation of a three-dimensional network of ridges, beams, or partitions within a biological tissue, creating internal structure and influencing its mechanical and physiological behavior. It develops as cells organize and remodel extracellular matrix in response to developmental signals, tissue geometry, and mechanical forces such as fluid flow or loading. In bioengineering, understanding trabeculation supports the design of biomimetic scaffolds, engineered cardiac tissues, and porous implants that reproduce native architecture. Quantifying trabecular patterns can also help researchers study tissue development, optimize mass transport, and model how structural changes affect function and disease.
