Activated Sludge Process

The activated sludge process is a biological wastewater treatment method that uses microorganisms to remove dissolved and suspended organic pollutants, helping produce cleaner effluent. In an aeration tank, oxygen supports microbial growth and metabolism as bacteria and other organisms form flocs that consume organic matter; the mixture then enters a settling tank, where biomass separates from treated water and a portion of the sludge returns to the aeration tank. This process is widely used in municipal and industrial treatment facilities, and its control of aeration, sludge age, and recycling influences treatment efficiency, solids production, and removal of nutrients such as nitrogen.

Microbial sulfate reduction is a process of great importance in environmental biotechnology. The success of the sulfidogenic reactors depends among other factors on the microbial composition of the sludge. Here, we present a protocol to develop sulfidogenic sludge from hydrothermal vents sediments in a UASB reactor for reductive dechlorination purposes.

2019

The size and shape of particles in activated sludge are important parameters that are measured using varying methods. Inaccuracies arise from non-representative sampling, suboptimal images, and subjective analysis parameters. To minimize these errors and ease measurement, we present a protocol specifying every step, including an open source software pipeline.
