Allophycocyanin

Allophycocyanin is a water-soluble, light-harvesting phycobiliprotein found in cyanobacteria and red algae, where it helps capture solar energy for photosynthesis. Organized within phycobilisomes, it absorbs light through covalently attached phycocyanobilin chromophores and transfers excitation energy toward chlorophyll in the photosynthetic reaction center. Its strong fluorescence and efficient energy transfer make allophycocyanin useful in fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, immunoassays, and other biological detection methods. Studying this pigment also clarifies how accessory pigments expand the wavelengths available for photosynthesis and supports the development of fluorescent probes and bio-inspired light-harvesting systems.
