Anammox

Anammox is a microbial nitrogen cycle process in which ammonium is anaerobically oxidized with nitrite to produce dinitrogen gas, making it important for nitrogen removal in natural and engineered systems. Specialized Planctomycete bacteria carry out the reaction under oxygen-limited conditions: nitrite is reduced to nitric oxide, which combines with ammonium to form hydrazine, and hydrazine is oxidized to nitrogen gas inside a membrane-bound anammoxosome. In biology and environmental engineering, anammox supports wastewater treatment with lower oxygen and chemical requirements than conventional nitrification-denitrification, while its study clarifies global nitrogen cycling and informs efforts to reduce energy use and greenhouse-gas emissions.
