Animal Migration Patterns

Animal Migration Patterns are recurring movements of animals between habitats, often across seasons or life stages, that help populations reach food, breeding sites, or favorable conditions. Many species use environmental cues such as daylight, temperature, rainfall, and magnetic fields, integrating these signals with internal biological clocks and energy reserves to orient routes and time departures. Studying migration reveals how behavior, physiology, and ecology interact, while conservation biology uses movement data to identify critical habitats, evaluate barriers such as roads and dams, track climate-driven shifts, and protect connected landscapes.

Co-Culturing Glioblastoma Cells on Patterned Neurons: A Technique to Monitor the Migration of Glioblastoma Cells on Rat Hippocampal Neurons In Vitro

This video describes a co-culture assay of glioblastoma cells on micropatterned neurons, which mimic the myelinated neuronal tracts invasion by the glioblastoma stem-like cells as they migrate on neurons in the peritumoral spaces. This assay can help analyze the effects of pharmacological drugs that inhibit glioblastoma cells' migration on neurons in a glioma.

The Transwell Migration Assay

2023

Cells migration in response to chemical cues is crucial to development, immunity and disease states such as cancer. To quantify cell migration, a simple assay was developed in 1961 by Dr. Stephen Boyden, which is now known as the transwell migration assay or Boyden chamber assay. This set-up consists an insert which separates the wells of a multiwell plate into top and bottom compartments. Cells whose migration is to be studied are seeded into the top compartment and the chemoattractant...

Here, we present an easy-to-use co-culture assay to analyze glioblastoma (GBM) migration on patterned neurons. We developed a macro in FiJi software for easy quantification of GBM cell migration on neurons, and observed that neurons modify GBM cell invasive capacity.

An Introduction to Cell Motility and Migration

2023

Cell motility and migration play important roles in both normal biology and in disease. On one hand, migration allows cells to generate complex tissues and organs during development, but on the other hand, the same mechanisms are used by tumor cells to move and spread in a process known as cancer metastasis. One of the primary cellular machineries that make cell movement possible is an intracellular network of myosin and actin molecules, together known as “actomyosin”, which creates a...
