Array Blocking

Array blocking is a preparatory technique that reduces nonspecific interactions on biological assay surfaces, improving the accuracy and interpretability of array-based measurements. A blocking reagent occupies unreacted or chemically active sites on a slide, membrane, or other solid support, limiting unintended adsorption of proteins, nucleic acids, antibodies, or detection molecules while leaving immobilized targets available for specific binding. In biology, array blocking supports DNA microarrays, protein arrays, antibody arrays, and related hybridization or binding assays by lowering background signal and improving signal-to-noise ratios. Effective blocking can increase reproducibility, strengthen quantitative comparisons, and help distinguish true molecular interactions from surface-related artifacts.

We developed and validated a small-footprint array of miniature chemostats built from readily available parts for low cost. Physiological and experimental evolution results were similar to larger volume chemostats. The ministat array provides a compact, inexpensive, and accessible platform for traditional chemostat experiments, functional genomics, and chemical screening applications.

The purpose of the Specimen Orientation Tag (SpOT) is to function as an orientation tool to aid in individual tissue identification in multi-tissue paraffin blocks. These protocols demonstrate how it is constructed easily from common, low-cost histology materials and serves as a reliable visual marker in paraffin blocks and sections.

Block Diagram Reduction

2024

The process of deriving the transfer function of a control system often involves reducing its block diagram to a single block. This simplification can be achieved through a series of strategic operations, including relocating branch points and comparators. These operations preserve the overall function of the system while allowing for easier manipulation and combination of blocks. The first step in this process is the identification and relocation of a branch point. A branch point, where a...
