Central Vein

The central vein is a blood vessel positioned within the center of a tissue or organ, where it collects blood from smaller vessels and directs it toward larger veins. In a classic liver lobule, blood flows through hepatic sinusoids from the portal triads toward the central vein, allowing hepatocytes to exchange substances with blood before it leaves the lobule through the hepatic venous system. Studying central vein structure and blood flow helps students and researchers understand liver organization, oxygen and nutrient gradients, and the effects of conditions such as congestion, fibrosis, or impaired circulation on tissue function.

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Central venous access is necessary in a multitude of clinical situations for hemodynamic monitoring, medication delivery, and blood sampling. There are three veins in the body that are accessed for central venous cannulation: the internal jugular, the subclavian, and the femoral vein. Central venous access via the subclavian vein has several advantages over other possible locations. The subclavian...

Laparoscopic Anatomic S7+S8d Resection Preserving Inferior Right Hepatic Vein and S6 with Right Hepatic Vein Transection

2025

We present a laparoscopic technique for anatomic S7+S8d resection with right hepatic vein transection, preserving the inferior right hepatic vein and segment S6. Relying on meticulous anatomical landmarks without intraoperative ultrasound, this approach offers a precise and parenchyma-sparing option for dorsally located right-liver tumors, particularly in settings with limited advanced navigation resources.

The Central Dogma

2019

Overview The central dogma of biology states that information encoded in the DNA is transferred to messenger RNA (mRNA), which then directs the synthesis of protein. The set of instructions that enable the mRNA nucleotide sequence to be decoded into amino acids is called the genetic code. The universal nature of this genetic code has spurred advances in scientific research, agriculture, and medicine. RNA Is the Missing Link between DNA and Proteins In the early 1900s, scientists discovered...
