Contamination Prevention

Contamination prevention is the systematic use of practices that keep unwanted microorganisms, chemicals, or biological materials from entering, spreading through, or compromising a scientific environment. In biology, it relies on aseptic technique, sterilization or disinfection, controlled handling, physical separation, and routine monitoring to interrupt contamination routes before they affect samples or cultures. These measures help preserve experimental integrity, protect personnel, and produce reliable, reproducible results in cell culture, microbiology, molecular biology, and clinical research. Effective prevention also supports accurate interpretation of biological observations by distinguishing genuine findings from changes caused by bacterial, fungal, or cross-sample contamination.

Contaminants and Errors

Effective sample preparation is crucial for accurate and reliable laboratory analysis. During this process, two significant sources of error can arise: concentration bias from improper sample splitting and contamination caused by methods used to reduce particle size, such as grinding or homogenization. Identifying and minimizing these potential errors is crucial to ensuring the validity of the analysis. Another key consideration is determining the appropriate number of samples required to...

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer. Some...

Contamination of food by microbial agents and natural toxins poses significant risks to public health. These hazards can be introduced at various points across the food supply chain, ranging from environmental sources to processing and storage stages. Understanding these contamination pathways is critical for developing strategies to ensure food safety.Seafood is particularly vulnerable to contamination through both environmental exposure and microbial colonization. Toxins from harmful algal...

Integration of microalgal cultivation with industrial flue gas will ultimately introduce heavy metals and other inorganic compounds into the growth media. This study presents a procedure used to determine the end fate and impact of heavy metals and inorganic contaminants on the growth of Nannochloropsis salina grown in photobioreactors.
