Egg Storage

Egg storage is the preservation of animal eggs or oocytes outside the organism while maintaining their viability, structural integrity, and potential for development. Storage relies on controlling temperature, humidity, gas exchange, and handling conditions; for long-term preservation, cryopreservation uses cryoprotective agents and carefully regulated cooling to limit ice-crystal formation and cellular damage. In biology, these methods support reproductive research, assisted reproduction, livestock breeding, hatchery management, and genetic conservation. Understanding how storage conditions affect metabolism, membrane stability, and developmental competence helps researchers improve survival rates and maintain valuable biological material for later fertilization or study.

A schema is a mental framework that helps individuals organize and interpret information. Schemata, formed from previous experiences, influence how we process new information: how we encode it, the inferences we make, and how we retrieve it. For instance, a schema for what a typical classroom looks like might include desks, a teacher's desk, a whiteboard, and students in such an environment. This expectation helps us quickly understand and navigate new classrooms without needing to analyze each...

2023

C. elegans egg-laying behavior can provide important information in developmental, reproductive, and anatomical studies. This video introduces the important steps of an egg laying assay and shows a sample experiment in which a drug is tested for reproductive toxicity.

Drosophila Egg Collection and Dechorionation: A Method to Remove the Outermost Egg Layer

2023

The Drosophila embryo is surrounded by protective outer membranes. To gain access to the embryo, the chorion–the outermost of the membranes–is often removed. This video describes a commonly used method of dechorionation using sodium hypochlorite. The example protocol demonstrates the procedure while employing sterile techniques necessary for axenic or gnotobiotic animal rearing.

Egg Windowing: A Method of Opening Fertilized Chicken Egg Shell to Expose Chorioallantoic Membrane Vasculature
