Endocytosis Recycling

Endocytosis recycling is a cellular process that retrieves and reuses plasma-membrane components and internalized molecules after they enter the cell, helping maintain membrane balance and regulate surface signaling. During endocytosis, the membrane forms vesicles that deliver cargo to early endosomes; sorting machinery directs selected receptors and membrane proteins into recycling vesicles, which return them to the cell surface while other cargo proceeds toward degradation. This pathway supports nutrient uptake, receptor regulation, synaptic vesicle turnover, and cell-surface remodeling. In biology research, studying endocytosis recycling helps explain how cells control communication, polarity, movement, and responses to changing environmental conditions.

An Introduction to Endocytosis and Exocytosis

2023

Cells can take in substances from the extracellular environment by endocytosis and actively release molecules into it by exocytosis. Such processes involve lipid membrane-bound sacs called vesicles. Knowledge of the molecular architecture and mechanisms of both is key to understanding normal cell physiology, as well as the disease states that arise when they become defective. This video will first briefly review a few pivotal discoveries in the history of endo- and exocytosis research. Next,...

FM Dyes in Vesicle Recycling

FM dyes are a class of fluorescent molecules that has found important use in studying the vesicle recycling process. By virtue of a chemical structure, these molecules can insert themselves into the outer leaflet of phospholipid bilayer membranes. After membrane insertion, they are internalized into the cell via endocytosed vesicles, and released when these vesicles recycle back to the membrane. Since, these dyes fluoresce strongly in the hydrophobic environment within membranes and weakly in...

Self-report vs. Behavioral Measures of Recycling

2023

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University One of the challenges in measuring an experimental variable is identifying the technique that will produce the more accurate measurement. The most common way to measure a dependent variable is self-report—asking the participant to describe his/her feelings, thoughts, or behaviors. Yet, people may not be honest. To truly know something about a participant, it may be necessary to see what they...

The Cell-based L-Glutathione Protection Assays to Study Endocytosis and Recycling of Plasma Membrane Proteins

Membrane trafficking involves transport of proteins from the plasma membrane to the cell interior (i.e. endocytosis) followed by trafficking to lysosomes for degradation or to the plasma membrane for recycling. Methods described in this article are designed to study endocytosis and recycling of plasma membrane proteins.

Endocytosis

2023

Eukaryotic cells acquire nutrients for growth and proliferation. Nutrients and other molecules that require degradation are internalized from the extracellular space by a process called endocytosis. The term ‘endocytosis' was first coined by Christian de Duve in 1963. Endocytosis always begins with the plasma membrane enclosing an incoming molecule to form a transport vesicle which, in some cases, can be coated with a protein called ‘clathrin.' Endocytosed material is either sorted through...
