Enrichment Media

Enrichment media are culture formulations designed to increase the abundance of a target microorganism or cell population from a mixed sample, making it easier to detect or isolate. They work by supplying nutrients and environmental conditions that favor the target while limiting competing organisms, often through selective chemicals, altered pH, temperature, or oxygen availability. In biology, these media support microbial enrichment before plating, microscopy, or molecular identification, improving recovery when target cells are rare or outnumbered by background populations. Their careful design helps researchers study microbial diversity, diagnose infections, monitor contamination, and isolate organisms with useful metabolic traits.

Blaize1, Elizabeth Suter1 1 Department of Biological Sciences, Wagner College, 1 Campus Road, Staten Island NY, 10301 Prokaryotic cells are able to inhabit nearly every environment on this planet. As a kingdom, they possess a great metabolic diversity, allowing them to use a wide variety of molecules for energy generation (1). Therefore, when cultivating these organisms in the lab, all necessary and specific molecules required to make energy must be...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Environmental enrichment involves objects and practices that encourage natural behaviors, improve psychological well-being, and promote better welfare in laboratory rodents. Environmental enrichment should be tailored to the...
