External Anatomy

External anatomy is the study of an organism’s structures that can be observed at or near its outer surface, including body regions, appendages, openings, and protective coverings. These features arise through development and work together through physical form, attachment, movement, sensory reception, gas exchange, feeding, or defense, depending on the organism. In biology, examining external anatomy helps researchers identify species, compare adaptations, describe body plans, and connect visible traits with habitat and behavior. Careful observation, measurement, dissection when appropriate, and imaging provide foundational evidence for taxonomy, ecology, evolutionary biology, and studies of organismal function.

External Anatomy of the Kidney

2025

The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs in the human body that play a critical role in maintaining overall health. They filter out waste products from the blood, regulate blood pressure, maintain electrolyte balance, and stimulate the production of red blood cells. The kidneys are located in the retroperitoneal space on either side of the vertebral column, protected posteriorly by the 11th and 12th ribs. The right kidney sits slightly lower than the left owing to the presence of the liver...

Work Done on a System by External Force

The work done by an external force on a particle changes its kinetic energy. However, internal forces must also be considered for a system of interacting particles. The potential energy formulation helps formulate the effect of internal forces. The net work done by an external force can be written in terms of the total change of mechanical energy, which includes both kinetic and potential energies. In the presence of a non-conservative opposing force, like friction, some part of the work done...

Anatomy of the Eyeball

The eye is a spherical, hollow structure composed of three tissue layers. The outer layer — the fibrous tunic, comprises the sclera — a white structure — and the cornea, which is transparent. The sclera encompasses some of the ocular surface, most of which is not visible. However, the 'white of the eye' is distinctively visible in humans compared to other species. The cornea, a clear covering at the front of the eye, enables light penetration. The eye's middle layer, the vascular tunic,...

The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth. The Crown, Neck, and Root The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or grinding food.
