Family History

Family history is the record of biological relationships, inherited traits, and health patterns across generations, providing context for understanding heredity and variation. In biology, researchers reconstruct family histories through pedigrees, historical records, and genetic data, then examine patterns of transmission to distinguish inherited characteristics from environmental influences. This information helps identify inheritance patterns, assess susceptibility to genetic disorders, guide genetic counseling, and support studies of human evolution and population diversity. Combining family records with molecular evidence can reveal how genes and environments shape traits, while also improving the interpretation of genetic test results and informing future biomedical research.

Protein Families

Protein families are groups of homologous proteins; that is, they have similarities in amino acid sequences and three-dimensional structures. Protein families usually occur because of gene duplication, where an additional copy of a gene is inserted into the genome of an organism. Mutations that change the amino acids but still allow the protein to be properly synthesized, will lead to new protein family members. If these new proteins contain similar amino acids in key locations, protein...

Gene Families

Gene families consist of groups of genes proposed to have originated from a common ancestor. Typically these arise through events in which a gene or genes are mistakenly duplicated during cell division. Unlike their parent genes (which are subject to selection pressure to maintain function), these gene copies do not need to preserve their sequences and may evolve at a relatively faster rate. Occasionally these regions can be adapted to take on new roles within the organism, becoming novel genes...

The 4 M’s Framework: Case History and Physical Examination of Older Adults

Source: Jennifer A. Ouellet and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine To meet the needs of older adults, all health professionals should be well acquainted with the history and physical examination considerations unique to this population. Physical examination plays an important role in the older patient to detect physiologic changes of aging, risk factors, and signs of pathology. While most of the general principles of the standard examination for adults apply to older patients, there are...

Constrained by limited energy and resources, organisms must compromise between offspring quantity and parental investment. This trade-off is represented by two primary reproductive strategies; K-strategists produce few offspring but provide substantial parental support, whereas r-strategists produce much progeny that receives little care. These strategies are related to an organism’s survival likelihood across its lifespan, which is represented by a survivorship curve. Three general types of...
