Feeding Assay

A feeding assay is an experimental method used to measure food intake and feeding behavior in living organisms, helping researchers assess how biology, environment, or treatments influence nutrition. In a controlled setup, organisms receive a defined food source, and consumption is quantified by measuring changes in food mass or volume, or by tracking a tracer such as a dye incorporated into the food. Feeding assays support studies of appetite regulation, metabolism, behavior, and genetic control of nutrient intake. They are also useful for evaluating physiological responses to environmental conditions and screening compounds that alter feeding or energy balance.

Behavioral assays provide powerful tools for understanding neuronal function. Here we present several protocols for quantifying predatory feeding behavior found in the model nematode Pristionchus pacificus and its relatives. Additionally, we provide methods for analyzing predatory feeding adaptations including mouth structures and teeth.

2023

This video describes a feeding assay for fruit flies in which colored food is used to monitor feeding and the effect added compounds may have on feeding activity. The example protocol tests the effects of several endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC).

High Fat Diet Feeding and High Throughput Triacylglyceride Assay in Drosophila Melanogaster

This is a high fat diet feeding protocol to induce obesity in Drosophila, a model for understanding fundamental molecular mechanisms implicated in lipotoxicity. It also provides a high throughput triacylglyceride assay for measuring fat accumulation in Drosophila and potentially other (insect) models under various dietary, environmental, genetic or physiological conditions.

Taste Preference Assay: A Method for Measuring Feeding Behavior in Drosophila

2023

This video describes the taste preference assay, a behavioral method used to measure attraction or avoidance towards colored solutions that taste differently by assessing the fly's abdominal coloration after ingestion of the preferred substance. The featured protocol demonstrates the procedure used to measure flies' preference towards solutions of varying sucrose concentrations.

Mosquito Feeding Assay: A Method to Evaluate Test Compound Effects on Mortality and Fecundity of Adult Female Mosquitoes
