Female Parental Care

Female parental care is the investment of a mother or other female parent in offspring survival and development, a widespread biological behavior shaped by ecological conditions and reproductive costs. It can involve nest building, incubation, feeding, grooming, protection, or thermoregulation, with neural and hormonal pathways coordinating behavior and energy allocation after reproduction. Studying these behaviors helps biologists explain how offspring develop, how caregiving evolves under pressures such as predation and resource availability, and how parent-offspring interactions influence population dynamics. Research on female parental care also informs animal behavior, ecology, evolutionary biology, and conservation by identifying conditions that support successful reproduction.

Parental Care

Many animals exhibit parental care behavior, including feeding, grooming, and protecting young offspring. Parental care is universal in mammals and birds, which often have young that are born relatively helpless. Several species of insects and fish, as well as some amphibians, also care for their young. Birds Parental care can occur even before hatching in birds, when parents sit on their eggs to incubate them. After hatching, the parents provide food for their offspring, and may continue to...

Diana Baumrind's four parenting styles — authoritarian, authoritative, neglectful, and permissive — each influence children's socio-emotional development differently. Children raised this way may lack social skills and initiative, usually comparing themselves to others unfavorably. Authoritative Parenting This...

Relationship with Parents: Attachment

Parent-child interactions lay the foundation for how we understand relationships throughout life. These interactions are not uniform across families; instead, they are shaped by a range of environmental, emotional, and behavioral factors unique to each caregiver-child dynamic. Social psychologists study these early relationships to understand how patterns formed in infancy influence social functioning and interpersonal behavior in adulthood.Attachment Theory and Early Relational ModelsJohn...
