Glucose Sucrose

Glucose and sucrose are biologically important carbohydrates that provide energy and support metabolism in living organisms. Glucose is a monosaccharide used directly in cellular respiration, whereas sucrose is a disaccharide formed from glucose and fructose; digestive enzymes hydrolyze sucrose into these component sugars before absorption. Cells then regulate glucose through transport, phosphorylation, and metabolic pathways such as glycolysis, while plants commonly produce and transport sucrose as a soluble form of chemical energy. Understanding their structures and conversion helps explain nutrition, digestion, energy flow, and carbohydrate transport in both animals and plants.

Liquid Phase Reactor: Sucrose Inversion

2023

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Both batch and continuous flow reactors are used in catalytic reactions. Packed beds, which use solid catalysts and a continuous flow, are the most common configuration. In the absence of an extensive recycle stream, such packed bed reactors are typically modeled as "plug flow". The other most common continuous reactor is a stirred tank, which is assumed to be perfectly...

Assessing Glucose Uptake in the Motor Neurons of Drosophila Larvae with Upregulated Glucose Metabolism

2025

The video demonstrates a technique for measuring glucose uptake in Drosophila larval motor neurons using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based intracellular glucose sensor. After dissecting the larvae to expose the ventral nerve cord, the motor neurons are visualized through the fluorescence emitted by the sensor's donor fluorophore. When stimulated with glucose, FRET between the sensor's donor and acceptor fluorophores triggers the emission of fluorescence from the acceptor,...

Purification of Bacteriophages Using a Sucrose Density Gradient

Source: Rustad, M., et.al. Synthesis of Infectious Bacteriophages in an E. coli-based Cell-free Expression System. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the purification of bacteriophages from a suspension containing host bacterial debris using a sucrose density gradient. It shows how the density gradient separates phages by buoyant density, enabling recovery of a visible band for resuspension and further analysis.

A General Method for Evaluating Incubation of Sucrose Craving in Rats

Responding for food or drug-paired cues increases over the course of a period of abstinence and this may relate to an increased susceptibility to relapse behaviors. Here we detail a procedure for evaluating this "incubation of craving" in rats that have self-administered sucrose.

In Vitro Glucose Depletion Assay: A Fluorescence-Based Method to Quantify Cellular Glucose Uptake via Extracellular Glucose Depletion Measurement
