Group Roles

Group roles are the distinct functions, behaviors, or social positions that individuals perform within a biological group, helping coordinate activities and improve collective performance. They arise through interactions among group members, including communication, cooperation, competition, dominance relationships, and division of labor; roles may be flexible or remain stable depending on environmental conditions and group structure. Studying group roles helps explain social organization in animals, from parental care and defense to foraging and reproduction, while also providing insight into behavioral adaptation, cooperation, and the evolution of social systems.
