Haploid Diploid Life Cycle

The haploid-diploid life cycle is a reproductive pattern in which organisms alternate between haploid cells or stages with one chromosome set and diploid stages with two, linking genetic continuity to variation. Meiosis reduces chromosome number from diploid to haploid, while fertilization fuses two haploid gametes to restore diploidy; mitosis then supports growth within each phase. In plants and many algae, multicellular haploid gametophytes and diploid sporophytes form distinct generations, whereas other organisms maintain one phase predominantly. Understanding this cycle helps explain inheritance, sexual reproduction, chromosome-number changes, and evolutionary strategies, while providing a framework for interpreting plant development and life histories.

The Angiosperm Life Cycle

2020

Plants have a life cycle split between two multicellular stages: a haploid stage—with cells containing one set of chromosomes—and a diploid stage—with cells containing two sets of chromosomes. The haploid stage is the gamete-producing gametophyte, and the diploid stage is the spore-producing sporophyte. Today, most plants grow from seeds and produce flowers and fruit; such plants are called angiosperms. Angiosperms begin as seeds—structures consisting of a protective seed coat, a nutrient...

Making Gynogenetic Diploid Zebrafish by Early Pressure

2009

This is a method for generating gynogenetic diploid zebrafish embryos (embryos whose only genetic contribution comes from the mother) by blocking the second meiotic division immediately after fertilization with ultraviolet light-inactivated sperm. EP embryos are not fully homozygous due to recombination during the first meiotic division, however they are homozygous at all loci that have not been separated from their centromere by recombination.

Retrovirus Life Cycles

Retroviruses have a single-stranded RNA genome that undergoes a special form of replication. Once the retrovirus has entered the host cell, an enzyme called reverse transcriptase synthesizes double-stranded DNA from the retroviral RNA genome. This DNA copy of the genome is then integrated into the host’s genome inside the nucleus via an enzyme called integrase. Consequently, the retroviral genome is transcribed into RNA whenever the host’s genome is transcribed, allowing the retrovirus to...

The Life-Cycle Hypothesis

The Life-Cycle Hypothesis (LCH), formulated by Franco Modigliani, offers a framework for understanding how individuals allocate consumption and saving across their lifespan to optimize financial well-being. Instead of linking consumption strictly to current income, the LCH posits that individuals plan intertemporally, aiming for consumption smoothing by balancing saving and dissaving in accordance with expected changes in income over time.Intertemporal Consumption SmoothingThe hypothesis...

2014

The zebrafish is a powerful model system for developmental biology and human disease research due to their genetic similarity with higher vertebrates. This protocol describes a methodology to create haploid zebrafish embryos that can be utilized for forward screen strategies to identify recessive mutations in genes essential for early embryogenesis.
