Hole Punch

A hole punch is a tool or technique that uses a sharp, usually cylindrical edge to cut a clean opening or uniform disc from a material, making it useful for standardized biological sampling. Applying controlled pressure drives the blade through the specimen against a firm support, producing consistent shapes while limiting damage around the cut. In biology, hole punches can prepare leaf discs for photosynthesis and transport assays, collect defined tissue samples, or create reproducible openings in membranes and laboratory materials. Consistent sample size improves comparisons among treatments and supports quantitative analysis in teaching laboratories and research workflows.

Detection of Black Holes

2023

Although black holes were theoretically postulated in the 1920s, they remained outside the domain of observational astronomy until the 1970s. Their closest cousins are neutron stars, which are composed almost entirely of neutrons packed against each other, making them extremely dense. A neutron star has the same mass as the Sun but its diameter is only a few kilometers. Therefore, the escape velocity from their surface is close to the speed of light. Not until the 1960s, when the first neutron...
