Infection Tracking

Infection tracking is the systematic detection and monitoring of pathogens, infected individuals, and transmission patterns to understand and control disease spread. It combines diagnostic testing, case reporting, contact tracing, and pathogen genomic sequencing to identify infections, link cases, and follow changes in transmission over time. In biology, these approaches help researchers study host–pathogen interactions, infection dynamics, and the emergence of variants. Infection tracking supports outbreak investigation, evaluates public health interventions, and guides containment strategies, while generating data that improve disease surveillance and strengthen preparedness for future infectious threats.

Source: Valentine, M. E., et al. Generation of In-Frame Gene Deletion Mutants in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Testing for Virulence Attenuation in a Simple Mouse Model of Infection. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)This video demonstrates the use of bioluminescence to visualize and compare the in vivo behavior of virulent and attenuated bacterial strains in mice. It outlines the preparation of bioluminescent bacterial suspensions and their intraperitoneal injection into mice. The virulent strain exhibits...

Photoconversion-Based Leukocyte Tracking in Bacterial-Infected Transgenic Zebrafish

2025

This video demonstrates the tracking of leukocyte recruitment using transgenic zebrafish larvae expressing photoconvertible green fluorescent protein. Pre-injecting red fluorescent dye-labeled bacteria into the otic vesicle and inducing photoconversion enables observation of leukocytes' migration, phagocytosis, and dispersal throughout the body, providing valuable insights into immune response dynamics.

A Luciferase-Fluorescent Reporter Influenza Virus to Track Viral Infections

2025

This video demonstrates a method to track viral infections in mouse models using a recombinant luciferase and fluorescence protein-expressing bi-reporter Influenza A virus. This method enables both in vivo and ex vivo studies, enabling researchers to gain insights into viral dynamics and the effects of interventions.

Reporter Enzyme Fluorescence Imaging for In Vivo Tracking of Bacterial Infection

2025

This video demonstrates the reporter enzyme fluorescence (REF) imaging for in vivo detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. The infected mice are intraperitoneally injected with a substrate for REF imaging. Upon being hydrolyzed by bacterial β-lactamase enzyme, the substrate emits fluorescence, the detection of which aids evaluation of infection.
