Iron Deficiency Anemia

Iron deficiency anemia is a blood disorder in which inadequate iron limits hemoglobin production, reducing the blood’s capacity to carry oxygen to tissues. As iron stores decline, cells cannot synthesize sufficient heme, producing smaller, paler red blood cells and potentially causing fatigue, weakness, and impaired concentration. The condition may result from insufficient intake, poor absorption, increased physiological demand, or chronic blood loss. Studying iron deficiency anemia connects nutrition, metabolism, hematology, and public health, while laboratory evaluation of hemoglobin, red blood cell indices, and iron status supports diagnosis, treatment planning, and prevention strategies.
