Katanin

Katanin is an ATP-dependent microtubule-severing protein complex that remodels the cytoskeleton by cutting microtubule polymers into shorter fragments. Its catalytic AAA+ ATPase subunit assembles on the microtubule lattice, where ATP hydrolysis drives conformational changes that extract or destabilize tubulin and promote breakage; accessory subunits help regulate activity and cellular targeting. In biology, katanin-mediated severing controls microtubule turnover, organization, and redistribution during cell division, neuronal development, and plant growth. Studying katanin links motor-like molecular activity to cytoskeletal dynamics and helps explain how cells rapidly reshape their internal architecture.
