Lewis Rats

Lewis rats are an inbred laboratory strain widely used as a genetically consistent animal model in biology and biomedical research. Developed through repeated brother-sister mating, the strain has relatively uniform genetic characteristics, allowing researchers to study disease processes and experimental treatments with reduced variation between animals. Lewis rats are particularly valuable in immunology, transplantation, autoimmune disease, neuroscience, and toxicology, where their reproducible responses support controlled comparisons. Their susceptibility to certain immune-mediated conditions and compatibility with established experimental protocols also make them important for investigating mechanisms of disease, evaluating therapies, and improving understanding of mammalian physiology.

Lewis Acids and Bases

In 1923, G. N. Lewis proposed a generalized definition of acid-base behavior in which acids and bases are identified by their ability to accept or to donate a pair of electrons and form a coordinate covalent bond. A coordinate covalent bond (or dative bond) occurs when one of the atoms in the bond provides both bonding electrons. For example, a coordinate covalent bond occurs when a water molecule combines with a hydrogen ion to form a hydronium ion. A coordinate covalent bond also results when...

Chemical bonds are complex interactions between two or more atoms or ions, which reduce the potential energy of the molecule. Gilbert N. Lewis developed a model called the Lewis model that simplified the depiction of chemical bond formation and provided straightforward explanations for the chemical bonds seen in most common compounds. Lewis Model The Lewis model depicts chemical bond formation by the sharing or transfer of valence electrons, which helps to attain a stable electron...

Covalent Bonding and Lewis Structures

Compared to ionic bonds, which results from the transfer of electrons between metallic and nonmetallic atoms, covalent bonds result from the mutual attraction of atoms for a “shared” pair of electrons. Covalent bonds are formed between two atoms when both have similar tendencies to attract electrons to themselves (i.e., when both atoms have identical or fairly similar ionization energies and electron affinities). Physical Properties of Covalent Compounds Compounds that contain covalent...

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University One of the goals of chemistry is to use models that account for trends and provide insights into the properties of reactants that contribute to reactivity. Substances have been classified as acids and bases since the time of the ancient Greeks, but the definition of acids and bases has been modified and expanded over the years.1 The ancient Greeks would characterize substances by taste, and defined acids as those that...
