Motion Sensitivity Testing

Motion sensitivity testing is a biological assessment of how effectively an organism detects and responds to movement, providing insight into sensory and motor function. Researchers expose subjects or cells to controlled motion stimuli that vary in speed, direction, contrast, or intensity, then measure detection thresholds, orientation, movement, or other behavioral responses. These outcomes reflect interactions among sensory receptors, neural circuits, and motor pathways that transform motion into measurable activity. In biology, the tests support research on vision, behavior, neurodevelopment, disease, and environmental adaptation, while also helping evaluate how genetic changes, drugs, or injuries alter sensory performance.

A method is described to measure three-dimensional vestibulo ocular reflexes (3D VOR) in humans using a six degrees of freedom (6DF) motion simulator. The gain and misalignment of the 3D angular VOR provide a direct measure of the quality of vestibular function. Representative data on healthy subjects are...

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates the kinematics of motion in 1 and 2 dimensions. This lab will begin by studying motion in 1 dimension, under constant acceleration, by launching a projectile directly upward and measuring the maximum height reached. This lab will verify that the maximum height reached is consistent with the kinematic...
