Navel Orangeworm

Navel orangeworm is a moth species, Amyelois transitella, whose larvae damage tree nuts and certain fruits, making it an important subject in agricultural biology and pest management. Adults lay eggs on susceptible or previously damaged hosts, and the developing larvae bore into nuts, feed on kernels, and produce webbing and frass; populations can persist by overwintering in unharvested “mummy” nuts. Studying this life cycle supports integrated pest management through orchard sanitation, harvest timing, pheromone-based monitoring, and targeted control, while also helping researchers assess crop losses, mycotoxin risks, and ecological interactions in nut-producing systems.
