Nutrient Requirement

Nutrient requirement is the amount and type of essential nutrients an organism needs to maintain metabolism, growth, reproduction, and health. In biology, requirements depend on how cells obtain and use macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids, along with vitamins, minerals, water, and other essential compounds for energy production, biosynthesis, and regulation of physiological processes. Scientists assess these needs by measuring nutrient intake, absorption, utilization, and effects of deficiency or excess under specific conditions. Understanding nutrient requirements supports dietary planning, animal and plant cultivation, disease prevention, and research on how environmental conditions and life stages shape biological function.

Nutrients in Aquatic Ecosystems

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Nitrogen and phosphorus are essential plant nutrients found in aquatic ecosystems and both are monitored as a part of water quality testing because in excess amounts they can cause significant water quality problems. Nitrogen in water is measured as the common form nitrate (NO3-) that is dissolved in water and readily absorbed by photosynthesizers such as algae. The common form of phosphorus measured is phosphate...

Here, we present an easy-to-follow protocol to establish a successful hydroponic system for plant nutrition studies. This protocol has been extensively tested in Arabidopsis and can easily be adapted to other plant species to study specific nutritional requirements or the effect of non-essential elements on plant growth and development.

Soil Nutrient Analysis: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, three soil macronutrients are chemically extracted, combined with color-based reagents, then analyzed using color to determine the nutrient concentration present in the soil sample. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the main components of soil fertilizer. These methods isolate each nutrient from the soil into a solution that can be analyzed using turbidity and color to determine the...

Capital Requirement

2025

Capital requirements are regulatory standards that compel banks to maintain a minimum amount of capital relative to the risks they assume. This ensures banks can absorb potential losses without collapsing, thereby protecting depositors and maintaining financial stability. The Capital Adequacy Ratio is the primary measure used to evaluate a bank’s capital strength. It is calculated as:Risk Weighting Risk weighting assigns different values to assets depending on their risk profile:Low-risk assets,...

Absorption of Nutrients

Absorption refers to taking dietary nutrients from the intestinal lumen for transportation throughout the body. After digestion in the small intestine, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are broken down into simpler forms. These essential macronutrients and other vital substances, such as vitamins, minerals, and water, are then prepared for absorption into the bloodstream. Enterocytes, which are specialized polar epithelial cells, line the mucosa of the small intestinal walls. These cells...
