Orbicularis Oculi

The orbicularis oculi is a ring-shaped facial muscle that surrounds the orbit and controls movement of the eyelids, making it essential for protecting the eye and distributing the tear film. Its concentric muscle fibers contract to close the eyelids, producing gentle blinking or forceful closure, while coordinated contraction helps move tears through the lacrimal drainage system. In biology, studying this muscle clarifies how skeletal muscle supports vision, reflexes, and facial expression. Its anatomy and function also aid clinical assessment of facial nerve activity, eyelid disorders, and conditions that impair blinking or ocular surface protection.
