Organic Matter

Organic matter is carbon-based material produced by living organisms or formed from their remains, and it is central to biological structure, energy flow, and nutrient cycling. In ecosystems, plants and other organisms create organic compounds through processes such as photosynthesis, while bacteria, fungi, and detritivores break them down through enzymatic decomposition, releasing nutrients and carbon dioxide. Organic matter supports soil fertility, provides energy for food webs, and contributes to carbon storage in soils, sediments, and biomass. Studying its production, transformation, and distribution helps biologists understand ecosystem function, decomposition, climate interactions, and the movement of essential elements through living systems.

Temperature Response of Soil Organic Matter Decomposition Rates: Construction and Applications of a Temperature Gradient Block

2026

We introduce a temperature gradient block and detail its construction and utilization. The block provides 22 discrete temperatures, linearly distributed between a user-defined range from 0 to 90 °C. Data collected from this setup enables testing and developing new theories on the temperature response of soil organic matter decomposition rates.

Classifying Matter by State

2020

Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Matter is all around us; the air, water, soil, mountains, even our bodies are all examples of matter. Matter is divided into three states — solid, liquid, and gas — that are commonly found on earth. The fourth state of matter, plasma, occurs naturally in the interiors of stars. Solids are characterized by a definite shape and volume. In a solid, the particles (atoms or...
