Parental Investment

Parental investment is the time, energy, and resources a parent allocates to producing and supporting offspring, often at a cost to its own future reproduction. In biology, these investments can include gamete production, gestation, feeding, protection, and care after birth or hatching. The trade-off arises because finite resources invested in one offspring may reduce a parent’s ability to survive, reproduce, or support others, while investment can increase offspring survival and fitness. Studying parental investment helps explain mating systems, sex differences, reproductive strategies, and patterns of cooperation and conflict across animals, providing a framework for interpreting behavior in evolutionary ecology.
