Passive Transport

Passive transport is the movement of substances across a cell membrane without direct energy input from ATP, making it essential for maintaining cellular balance. Molecules move down their concentration or electrochemical gradients, either through the lipid bilayer by simple diffusion or through membrane proteins by facilitated diffusion; osmosis describes the passive movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane. These processes depend on factors such as membrane permeability, particle size, and gradient strength. In biology, passive transport supports nutrient uptake, gas exchange, waste removal, and regulation of cell volume, while providing a foundation for understanding membrane function and homeostasis.

Drug Absorption Mechanism: Passive Membrane Transport

2023

Passive transport is a method of drug absorption where small, lipid-soluble drugs can move across the cell membrane. This movement happens along the concentration gradient, which is a natural flow from higher to lower concentration areas. The speed at which the drug moves is directly related to its lipid–water partition coefficient. This means that the more a drug dissolves in lipids, the faster it diffuses or spreads throughout the body. It is important to note that most drugs are either weak...

Passive filters are utilized to shape the frequency spectrum of signals across a diverse array of applications. These filters, using only passive elements like resistors (R), inductors (L), and capacitors (C), are capable of selectively allowing or blocking certain frequency ranges without the need for external power sources. Low-Pass Filters Low-pass filters are designed to transmit signals with frequencies lower than the cutoff frequency, ωc, and attenuate those above it. The cutoff frequency...
