Photorespiration

Photorespiration is a light-associated metabolic pathway that processes a by-product of photosynthesis and influences plant carbon fixation and productivity. When the enzyme RuBisCO binds oxygen instead of carbon dioxide, it converts ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate into one molecule of 3-phosphoglycerate and one molecule of 2-phosphoglycolate; plants then recycle 2-phosphoglycolate through coordinated reactions in chloroplasts, peroxisomes, and mitochondria, releasing carbon dioxide and consuming energy. Photorespiration becomes more prominent in C3 plants under warm, dry conditions when stomatal closure lowers internal carbon dioxide. Understanding this pathway supports research on crop efficiency and the evolutionary advantages of C4 and CAM photosynthesis.
