Photosynthetic Performance

Photosynthetic performance describes how effectively an organism converts light energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis, making it a key measure of biological productivity and plant function. It depends on the coordinated capture of light, electron transport, water use, and carbon dioxide fixation, while factors such as light intensity, temperature, water availability, and nutrient status influence the balance between energy production and stress. Measuring photosynthetic performance helps researchers assess plant health, growth, and responses to environmental change. In biology, these evaluations support studies of plant physiology, ecosystem productivity, crop improvement, and the effects of climate-related conditions on photosynthetic organisms.

Source: Shivaiah, K., et al. Plastoglobule Lipid Droplet Isolation from Plant Leaf Tissue and Cyanobacteria. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)The video demonstrates the isolation of plastoglobules from cyanobacteria. It begins with a culture of cyanobacteria and proceeds through cell disruption using mechanical force. The release of photosynthetic pigments indicates successful lysis. A sucrose step gradient is then used to separate cellular components by density, allowing low-density plastoglobules to form a...

An experimental methodology is presented to compare the performance of small (100 L) and large (1,000 L) scale reactors designed for algae remediation of landfill wastewater. System characteristics, including surface area to volume ratio, retention time, biomass density, and wastewater feed concentrations, can be adjusted based on application.
